Siung Cliff is located at Siung Beach in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, approximately 65 kilometers from Yogyakarta city center. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by car or motorcycle, leading visitors away from the city and into the dramatic coastal landscape of southern Gunungkidul.
Siung Beach is known for its unspoiled coastal scenery, clear views of the Indian Ocean, and impressive limestone cliffs rising around the shoreline. These cliffs have made Siung much more than a beach destination—they have also established it as one of Yogyakarta’s best-known natural rock climbing areas.
Historically, Siung has been reported to have around 250 climbing routes, offering a wide variety of challenges for climbers of different experience levels, from recreational and sport climbing to more demanding routes for experienced climbers.
For rock climbing enthusiasts, Siung Cliff has long been a special place.
On weekends, climbers from climbing communities, university outdoor clubs (Mapala), climbing clubs, and independent groups come to Siung. Some simply want to spend a weekend climbing and enjoying the coast, while others come for serious training—to build endurance, improve their technique, take on challenging routes, and strengthen their confidence on natural rock.
Yet for first-time visitors, finding reliable information about Siung Beach and its climbing areas has not always been easy. Beginner climbers, in particular, may want to experience climbing at Siung but have no idea where to start, which routes are suitable for them, or whom they should contact for assistance.
